WhatsApp SIM binding - phone with registered SIM card

WhatsApp SIM Binding in India: WhatsApp Will Work Only With Your Registered SIM From 1 January 2027

From 1 January 2027, WhatsApp will no longer work on your phone if the SIM card you registered with is not inside it. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has confirmed that SIM binding is becoming mandatory for messaging apps in India, and the apps have until 31 December 2026 to comply. Here is what the new rule means for you.

  • SIM binding start date: 1 January 2027
  • Deadline for apps to comply: 31 December 2026
  • Rule issued on: 28 November 2025, under the Telecom Cyber Security Rules, 2024
  • Apps covered: WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Arattai, ShareChat, JioChat, Josh and other app-based communication services
  • Biggest change: the app stops working if the registered SIM is removed or deactivated — and WhatsApp Web will log out every 6 hours

What is SIM Binding?

SIM binding means your messaging account stays permanently linked — bound — to the physical SIM card of the mobile number you used to sign up. Today, you can register on WhatsApp with a one-time OTP and then remove the SIM, put it in another phone, or keep using the app for years on Wi-Fi alone. Under SIM binding, the app will keep checking that the same registered SIM is present and active in the device. If it is not, the service stops until a valid SIM is inserted again.

WhatsApp SIM Binding Rules: What Changes From 1 January 2027

  • The SIM must stay in the phone. WhatsApp, Telegram and other covered apps must make sure the registered SIM remains present and active. If the SIM is removed, replaced or deactivated, the app’s functionality will stop until a valid SIM is reinserted.
  • WhatsApp Web will log out every 6 hours. Web and desktop sessions must end no later than every six hours, after which you will have to re-link by scanning a QR code from your primary phone.
  • Apple has already prepared iPhones. According to reports, an iOS software update released in September added the ability to detect when an iPhone is operating without a SIM card — a step towards this rule.
  • Not every app is in the same position. The latest reports say Snapchat may be exempt from the binding requirement, while Signal has not yet responded to the government’s notices.

A DoT official quoted in reports said the department is “all set to make it effective from January 1, 2027”.

Who Will Be Affected?

Most people who keep their registered SIM in their main phone will notice no change. The rule will pinch these users the most:

  • People using an old phone on Wi-Fi without any SIM — a very common setup in India for parents and kids
  • Users who keep their main SIM in a second phone and run WhatsApp on another device
  • Tablet users, multi-device users and frequent travellers who swap SIM cards
  • Small businesses and shops running WhatsApp on a separate office phone or desktop

One clarification: no report says WhatsApp will stop working on any particular phone model. Any phone will work — as long as the registered SIM is active inside it.

Why Has the Government Made SIM Binding Mandatory?

The DoT found that app-based services were letting people use Indian mobile numbers without the SIM being present in the device at all. That gap is heavily misused: scammers — many operating from outside India — run WhatsApp and Telegram accounts for phishing, impersonation and “digital arrest” fraud long after the original SIM is gone. Reports citing official estimates put such fraud losses at over ₹22,000 crore. By binding every account to a live, physical SIM, the government wants every messaging account to stay traceable to a real, present SIM card.

What Should You Do Before 1 January 2027?

  • Keep your registered SIM active. A number deactivated for non-recharge will break your messaging apps, not just your calls.
  • Keep that SIM in your primary phone — or use WhatsApp’s change-number feature to move your account to the number whose SIM stays in your phone.
  • Expect more logouts on WhatsApp Web. If you use WhatsApp on an office computer all day, be ready to scan a QR code every 6 hours.
  • Plan for Wi-Fi-only phones at home. A family phone running only on Wi-Fi will need a SIM, or its account will stop working.

SIM binding should make life harder for scammers — but it will also inconvenience crores of genuine users who rely on second phones and Wi-Fi-only devices. The real test is how smoothly WhatsApp and Telegram roll this out before the deadline. Will this rule change how you use WhatsApp? Tell us in the comments.
